April 2023 was a memorable month for my family as we embarked on a short but eventful trip to Niš, Serbia. I chose the cozy Guest Accommodation Majesty as our base camp for the weekend.
Day 1: A Journey Through History and Culture
The first day began with a visit to the Niš Fortress, a towering structure that has witnessed centuries of history. We explored the fortress grounds, marveled at its ancient architecture, and learned about its fascinating past.
Next, we headed to the Skull Tower, a unique monument built from the skulls of Serbian rebels who fought against the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. This sobering reminder of Serbia’s turbulent history served as an important lesson for me.
I also paid a visit to the Red Cross Concentration Camp, a harrowing site where thousands of people were imprisoned and killed during World War II. This sobering experience reminded me of the importance of fighting for human rights and peace.
In the afternoon, I visited the charming Kazandžijsko Sokace (Tinsmiths’ Alley), a cobblestone alley lined with traditional Serbian houses and artisan workshops. I admired the unique architecture, browsed the shops, and took a photo with the famous statue of people enjoying a meal with their dog.
While I explored the alley, my mom decided to visit the underground shopping street, but unfortunately, it was closed. We didn’t let this minor setback dampen our spirits and continued to enjoy the vibrant streets and local cuisine.
Day 2: A Date with Nature
On Sunday, we decided to embrace nature and headed to Đavolja Varoš (Devil’s Town), a geological wonder featuring unique rock formations called “towers.” We hiked through the otherworldly landscape, marveling at the spires and taking in the breathtaking views.
My family trip to Niš was a perfect blend of history, culture, and nature, making it a weekend I’ll never forget. I returned home with not just photographs but also wonderful memories of my time spent exploring this beautiful city.
