From August 16th to 18th, 2024, I joined the Photoworld Club for an unforgettable weekend of adventure photography in Gorno Kapinovo. This charming village, nestled in the heart of the Kurdzhali region, became our playground for exploration. We stayed at the cozy, family-run Hotel Lilium, which served as our base. It was the perfect starting point for capturing the natural beauty of Gorno Kapinovo and its surroundings.
Capturing the magical of the village of Lisitsite and the longest rope bridge
Our first photographic adventure in Gorno Kapinovo took us to the iconic bridge near the village of Lisitsite. This engineering marvel, spanning gracefully over the river, is a favorite among photographers – and for good reason. The serene landscape surrounding Lisitsite provided the perfect backdrop for capturing reflections and experimenting with light and shadow.
Exploring The Womb Cave
The next day, we set off to explore the mysterious Womb Cave. This unique cave, renowned for its symbolic shape, is steeped in legend and history. The hike up to the cave was an adventure in itself, with my camera constantly in action, capturing the rugged terrain and the beautiful play of light filtering through the trees. Inside, the cave’s natural formation created a surreal atmosphere, challenging me to capture its enigmatic essence through my lens.
The mesmerizing meanders of the Arda river
No trip to the Kurdzhali region would be complete without photographing the mesmerizing meanders of the Arda River. These winding curves of the river are a testament to nature’s beauty, and I spent hours at various vantage points, striving to capture the perfect shot of the gentle flow of water as it carved its way through the landscape. The light throughout the day constantly changed, offering different moods—from the soft glow of dawn to the warm, golden hues of sunset.
The majestic Curve of the Arda river
As we continued our exploration, we visited one of the most famous bends of the Arda River, known as the Curve of Аrda river. This dramatic curve in the river is a popular spot for photographers, and it’s easy to see why. The sweeping view of the river, set against rolling hills, made for stunning compositions. Whether I used a wide-angle lens to capture the grandeur of the scene or zoomed in for more intimate shots, every angle revealed something new and captivating.
Discovering the 600-Year-Old Wooden Mosque in Podkova
As I ventured through the village of Podkova, I was drawn to the towering minaret of the 600-year-old wooden mosque, known as “The Mosque of the Seven Maidens.” This mosque, a unique example of Islamic architecture, is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria. It holds deep spiritual significance for the local community, predominantly composed of Bulgarian Muslims and Turks who practice Islam.
The mosque is always open to visitors, welcoming anyone who wishes to explore its serene grounds. I stepped through the wooden gate into the well-maintained courtyard, where colorful flower beds added to the peaceful ambiance. Before entering the sacred space, I followed tradition by removing my shoes, feeling the cool earth beneath my feet as I entered the mosque’s tranquil interior.
A random encounter with a horse base
On our final day, we stumbled upon a horse base that wasn’t part of our original plan. This unexpected discovery turned out to be a delightful experience. The horses, grazing peacefully against the picturesque landscape, added a rustic charm to my photographic collection. The interaction between the animals and their natural surroundings made for some truly unique shots, rounding off my weekend of adventure photography on a high note.
Reflecting on the experience
As I packed up my gear and prepared to leave Gorno Kapinovo, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of fulfillment. This weekend wasn’t just about taking photographs; it was about connecting with nature, exploring new places, and sharing the experience with fellow photography enthusiasts. The memories captured through my lens will undoubtedly serve as a lasting reminder of the beauty and adventure that awaits those who seek it.
If you ever find yourself in the Кърджали region, I highly recommend taking the time to explore these stunning locations – with your camera in hand, of course!
