Lost & Found in Vrachanski Balkan: Hiking Kobilini Steni from Opletnya

Share

Hike at a Glance

  • Starting Point: Opletnya Village (via Kozi Voda)
  • Destination: Kobilini Steni (Кобилини стени)
  • Total Duration: 6–8 hours
  • Terrain: Steep forest ascents, open karst pastures, dramatic ridge lines
  • Verdict: Unforgettable. Already planning the re-match.

1. The Long Grind Up from Opletnya

Starting from the river valley in Opletnya, the trail wastes no time kicking into high gear. The initial climb up toward Kozi Voda is a serious leg-burner, pushing up through dense woods and rocky paths as you gain elevation fast.

Once you push past the tree line near Kozi Voda, the landscape opens up completely—offering sweeping panoramic views of the Iskar Gorge behind you and the jagged crests of Vrachanski Balkan ahead.

2. Reaching the Edge of Kobilini Steni

Emerging onto the ridge near Kobilini Steni makes all that uphill slog instantly disappear. Standing beside those massive, step-like limestone walls dropping straight into the abyss is breathtaking. The shear scale of the rock faces up close is something a camera barely captures.

3. The Unplanned Detour (Getting Lost)

Taking in the views was the easy part—getting back down proved to be the actual challenge.

On the return route past Kozi Voda, trail markings got tricky between the karst sinkholes and scrub bushes. What was supposed to be a smooth descent turned into a 2-hour wild bushwhack trying to relocate the path down to the village.

While wandering off-trail adds a bit of unwanted adrenaline to an 8-hour day, finding the trail again and making it back safe just made the cold drink at the end feel twice as earned.

Notes for the Re-Match

Watch the daylight: Extra hours spent route-finding mean starting as early in the morning as possible.

Respect the elevation gain: Going from Opletnya to the ridge involves massive vertical gain—pack plenty of energy snacks!

Download offline maps: The trails around Kozi Voda can fade quickly in high summer grass; offline GPS is a must.
