Todorov Den 2024 in Voinyagovtsi wasn’t part of my weekend plans—at least not until my dad insisted. He was the only real enthusiast in the family, so I decided to join him. The event took place on Saturday, March 23rd, and it turned out to be a beautiful mix of horses, traditions, and village life just outside Sofia.
Todorov Den 2024 in Voinyagovtsi: Where Spring and Tradition Meet
Known as Todor’s Day or Horse Easter, Todorov Den is a special spring holiday in Bulgaria. It’s celebrated on the first Saturday of Lent. People honor St. Theodore Tyro, the warrior saint believed to ride his horse to chase away winter and bring in the spring.
We headed to Voinyagovtsi, a small village near Sofia, where the local horse base hosted the celebration. My dad was excited, and soon enough, so was I.
Horses, Animals, and Folk Spirit All Around
The main event was the horse races (кушии). Local riders paraded their well-groomed horses, decorated with flowers and beads. The energy was high, and the cheering crowd made it feel like a festival.
However, it wasn’t just about the horses. I saw goats, chickens, sheep, and plenty of families exploring the animal areas. Traditional Bulgarian music played loudly while dancers in colorful folk costumes spun in rhythm. Laughter, clapping, and village chatter filled the air.
The Way Back: Traffic, but Worth It
After hours of joy, we decided to head home. Unfortunately, so did everyone else. The traffic jam leaving Todorov Den 2024 in Voinyagovtsi stretched for miles. Still, no one honked or looked annoyed. It was clear the day had been worth it.

Todorov Den isn’t just about horses. It’s a celebration of renewal, strength, and community. In a world rushing forward, days like this bring us back to our roots. Todorov Den 2024 in Voinyagovtsi reminded me that even a simple village event can stir the heart.
