On September 21st, I had the joy of attending and photographing the 29th Ratha Yatra Festival in Sofia – a vibrant celebration of spiritual unity, culture, and devotion.
The Festival of Chariots
The Ratha Yatra Festival, also known as the Festival of Chariots, comes from ancient India. Over the past fifty years, it has spread across the world, sharing a message of love and unity among people of all backgrounds.
In Sofia, the event took place at the Summer Stage in Borisova Garden. The park turned into a lively space of smiles, dance, and song. Everywhere, people connected through joy, devotion, and culture.
Activities and Experiences
The festival offered many ways to explore Indian culture and spirituality. Visitors could join yoga sessions, ask questions at the spiritual Q&A tent, or enjoy delicious Vedic vegetarian food.
There were stands with books on self-development, henna art workshops, and sari dressing sessions. For children, there was a special dance and play area. Others explored astrology, art stands, and a photo exhibition. Each activity created a bridge between cultures and generations.
The Grand Parade
At 3 PM, the heart of the festival came alive — the Ratha Yatra parade. The magnificent chariot of Lord Jagannatha, a true “temple on wheels,” rolled through the park and the streets of Sofia.
Participants danced, sang, and chanted mantras as they pulled the chariot through NDK, Graf Ignatiev, and Vitosha Boulevard. The mix of traditional rhythms and city life created an unforgettable scene. It was a moment where spirituality met modern life in full color.
Evening Performances
As evening approached, the festival continued with a stage program at the Summer Stage. The performances blended traditional and modern art — from kirtan concerts and classical Indian dance to mantra rock music and a fire show.
Each act reflected devotion, creativity, and passion. The performances brought the spirit of India to Sofia and closed the day on a powerful note.
A Day of Connection
The Ratha Yatra Festival Sofia was not only a cultural event. It was a celebration of unity, love, and the timeless human search for joy and meaning.
Organized by ISKCON Bulgaria, with the support of the Embassy of India, the festival once again showed that spirituality can bring people together — through art, food, and shared happiness.
Through my lens, I tried to capture not just the colors and faces, but the spirit of the day — the love, devotion, and unity that make Ratha Yatra such a unique celebration.
