“Together and Apart” photo series – Photovacation 2024 story

The Together and Apart photo series is my five-frame project for the “27 Frames” contest at Photovacation 2024, organized by Photosynthesis.

The challenge was simple but exciting: shoot 27 frames on a disposable Ilford B&W Camera + HP5 PLUS 400 and turn them into a story based on the theme together and apart.

Together and Apart Photo Series – The Concept

I wanted to tell the story of four escaped prisoners. I started with “prison-style” portraits of fellow Photovacation participants. Each frame highlighted isolation and individuality, much like black-and-white prison photos where the face dominates but the setting feels heavy.

The last shot brought all the “escapees” together on the seashore. This moment symbolized both freedom and the community they built after their escape. My idea was simple: contrast individuality with connection, and isolation with togetherness.

Creating the Photovacation 2024 Story

To achieve the look of prison mugshots, I combined two portraits in each frame—one frontal and one profile. This created a realistic police-style effect.

However, the jury did not welcome this approach. The contest rules did not ban editing, but they felt my method clashed with the spirit of the event. Because of that, my Together and Apart photo series was disqualified.

Lessons from the Photography Contest

I didn’t win any prizes, but I gained something more valuable. The series remains in my portfolio, and Photovacation gave me new friends, inspiration, and unforgettable memories.

Every creative challenge—no matter the result—teaches a lesson and opens the door to growth.
