Nestled in the heart of Bulgaria, the St. Nicholas Orphanage has been a beacon of hope for countless souls since its inception in 1988. Situated within the grounds of the “Holy Trinity” church in the village of Novi Khan, this haven was established under the guidance and care of the Church Brotherhood.
With a modest initial investment of 480 BGN, the construction began. From its earliest days to the present, the orphanage has been sustained and equipped solely through the generosity of donations. Neither state institutions nor church bodies have been solicited for aid.
A Place of Refuge
Over the span of two decades, more than 900 individuals have passed through the doors of the orphanage, finding solace, warm meals, and clothing within its walls. It is a place where the needy find shelter while they rebuild their lives.
As of November 2016, the homes in both Novi Khan and Yakimovo are inhabited by 310 individuals, including 170 children ranging from infants born in the home to those up to 18 years old. The younger children attend preschool, while the older ones attend school in Novi Khan, Yakimovo (up to 8th grade), Sofia (high school), and the Sofia Seminary. Babies are lovingly cared for within the home by their mothers.
In addition to the Novi Khan location, some families are situated in the family houses of the Yakimovo colony, located in the Montana region.
Father Ivan’s aspiration reaches beyond providing a temporary shelter; he aims to establish true homes for the people of Yakimovo. He endeavors to teach them to care for themselves by tending to the land and cultivating the agricultural resources available.
Capturing the Spirit
During my recent visit to the St. Nicholas Orphanage, I was humbled by the resilience and determination that radiated from its walls. With my camera in hand, I embarked on a journey to capture the essence of this remarkable place.
For over 20 years, the orphanage has been a lifeline for those seeking refuge and renewal. Over 900 individuals have passed through its doors, each leaving a trace of their journey. I aimed to capture the stories etched in their eyes, the shared laughter echoing in the corridors, and the sense of community that flourishes against all odds.
The St. Nicholas Orphanage is more than a shelter; it is a testament to the power of compassion, selflessness, and unity. The children’s eyes speak volumes of their dreams, hopes, and aspirations. The resilient souls I met are a living testament to the transformative potential of love and care.
As I wandered through the village of Novi Khan and Yakimovo, I witnessed Father Ivan’s unwavering dedication to not only providing a roof overhead but also nurturing a sense of belonging and purpose. It was an honor to document the stories of those who call this orphanage home, even if only for a little while.
Through my lens, I aimed to capture
- The unbreakable spirit that prevails
- The joy that transcends circumstances
- The bonds that have been forged within these walls
The St. Nicholas Orphanage is a place of love, strength, and hope. I am honored to share a glimpse of its beauty through my photography.
