International Kraishte Gathering 2025 in Bobeshino

On September 22, 2025 — Bulgaria’s Independence Day — I visited and photographed the International Kraishte Gathering 2025 in Bobeshino. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the event. It has become a vibrant symbol of unity and shared heritage between Bulgaria and Serbia.

The Village of Bobeshino – Between Mountains and Borders

Bobeshino is a peaceful mountain village in Western Bulgaria. It lies in the northwestern part of the Kamenitsa region, within the Chudinska Mountain range, close to the Bulgarian–Serbian border. The village stands 27.5 kilometers west-northwest of Kyustendil.

At the confluence of the Kopriva and Selečka rivers, the elevation reaches 875 meters, rising to 1,052 meters near the border church. The name Bobeshino comes from bob — the Bulgarian word for bean — a crop that once grew abundantly here.

The climate is temperate and semi-mountainous, offering fresh air, cool summers, and mild winters. Bobeshino spreads across several neighborhoods: Shirokodolska, Tseryanska, Ridarska, Lopushanska, Rekata (the center), Yagodichka, Zverska, Sredna, Peshterska, Padishka, and Tsiganska.

After the Treaty of Neuilly (1920), half of Peshterska neighborhood ended up in Serbian territory. For years, villagers crossed the border daily to work their land. They paid taxes in the Serbian village of Bistar and carried a special pass called a prelaznitsa. This routine continued until 1949, except during the tense wartime years between 1941 and 1944, when political pressure forced many families to abandon their properties.

A Tradition Born at the Border

Since 2004, the International Kraishte Gathering has taken place every September 22, on Bulgaria’s Independence Day. The event unfolds in the Rudinata area, right beside the border line and the small church of St. John the Baptist (Свети Йоан Кръстител). Each year, over 600 people gather on the wide meadow to celebrate friendship and faith.

Locals prepare a kurban — a shared feast that alternates between Bulgarian and Serbian hosts. Cultural and artistic performances fill the day with music and color, strengthening the bond between the two nations.

The Spirit of the International Kraishte Gathering 2025

The 2025 edition continued this cherished tradition. Kyustendil Municipality and the Bobeshino Mayor’s Office organized the event, featuring folk singer Slava Sokolova and ensembles from the Bosilegrad Cultural Center and Sports Union.

Nearby stands the St. John the Baptist Church, built in 1886 as a spiritual beacon for locals. The border once passed through its walls, but villagers convinced officials to move it a few meters away. The church has a single nave, a wooden semicylindrical vault, and floral ornaments carved into its iconostasis. Painter Eustathius Popdimitrov from Osoy, now part of North Macedonia, created its beautiful icons.

Several officers’ graves lie next to the church, preserving the memory of the region’s soldiers from the early 19th century.

A Day of Culture, Faith, and Friendship

Throughout the day, the meadow buzzed with life. People from both sides of the border shared food, laughter, and dance. Folk songs echoed across the hills. The International Kraishte Gathering 2025 once again proved that traditions live on when communities come together in peace.
