The Sofia Traces Photography Challenge was one of the most creative photography events I’ve participated in this year. As part of the Week of Photography in Ancient Sofia, photographers gathered for a six-hour mission that tested creativity, observation, and storytelling. The surprise theme, revealed only at the start of the competition, was “Traces” (“Следи”). Every participant had just six hours to create their work and could submit up to three photographs for the final judging.
Although I didn’t receive one of the awards, I left with something even more valuable: a new perspective on visual storytelling. Photography competitions like this are less about winning and more about challenging yourself to think differently under pressure.
Interpreting the Theme “Traces”
Instead of photographing obvious footprints or physical marks, I wanted to explore the idea of human presence through absence. My concept imagines someone who has vanished, leaving behind only subtle evidence that they were once there.
Using water, clothing, shoes, and carefully chosen urban locations around Sofia, I created the illusion of an invisible person whose only remaining trace is a wet silhouette on the ground. Each photograph tells part of that story while inviting viewers to imagine what happened moments before the scene was captured.
The graffiti-covered walls and industrial surroundings became an important part of the narrative, adding texture, contrast, and emotion to the images.
Why Photography Challenges Matter
Events like the Sofia Traces Photography Challenge encourage photographers to step outside their comfort zone. Working with a strict time limit forces quick decisions, creative problem-solving, and a willingness to experiment.
Having only three final submissions also means every image must communicate an idea clearly. Selecting those photographs was almost as challenging as creating them.
Whether you are an experienced photographer or just starting your journey, these competitions are a great way to improve your technical skills, develop your artistic voice, and meet other passionate photographers.
